You might as well know up front: I'm not a fan of protein shakes.
We're made to chew our food and nutrients, not to "drink" them. Think of it: what naturally-occurring protein comes in a liquid form? Can you name one? I can't. Obviously, Mother Nature overlooked this "necessity." But wait! ... what have we here? Modern Science to the "rescue."
Most of these "energy drinks," "on-the-go nutritional beverages," and "meal replacements" are concoctions formulated in a laboratory by geeks in lab coats. I haven't seen one of them (commercially available) that aren't mixtures of chemicals that have no business being ingested. A pea protein shake (made yourself from pea protein powder) is the closest I'd come to approving. Whey- or Rice-based? No.
If you MUST have one (y'know, because the world is on fire, or your refrigerator and pantry are infested with ferrets) make sure you eat (i.e., chew) something, say, a piece of fruit, first, to get the digestive system started. Mastication (chewing) starts the natural flow of digestive juices, which start to break down the food which we chew and swallow. Without the digestive enzymes created by the act of chewing, you bombard your stomach with [whatever those things contain] and NO digestive enzymes, limiting (or certainly hindering) the uptake of any nutritional value these protein potions purportedly provide.
Eat real food whenever you can.
